In four months, France will host the Paris Olympics, but which France will show up? Torn between tradition and modernity, the country is in the midst of an identity crisis. Right-wing critics say Ms. Nakamura’s music does not represent France, and the prospect of her performing has led to a barrage of racist insults online against her. The outcry has compounded a fight over an official poster unveiled this month: a pastel rendering of the city’s landmarks thronging with people in a busy style reminiscent of the “Where’s Waldo?” children’s books. An opinion essay in the right-wing Journal du Dimanche said “the malaise of a nation in the throes of deconstruction” was in full view.

Adm. Philippe de Gaulle, the oldest child of the French wartime leader and former president Charles de Gaulle, died on Wednesday in Paris. His death was confirmed by the Élysée Palace, the seat of the French presidency. His son Yves told the newspaper Le Figaro that he died “on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday” at the Institution Nationale des Invalides, the historic French veterans hospital in central Paris. The French Navy’s official Twitter account said Admiral de Gaulle died on Wednesday. Admiral de Gaulle spent his life in the shadow of his father, France’s wartime savior and the founder of its Fifth Republic, despite his own illustrious record in the French Resistance and his distinguished military career afterward.

Meanwhile over at Miu Miu, it was a heartfelt adieu to Fabio Zambernardi after more than four decades with the Prada Group; as in Milan, Miuccia Prada came out and took a bow with him one last time. Pamela Anderson attended fashion week shows sans makeup, as shown here at Vivienne Westwood. At Miu Miu, Sydney Sweeney, Emma Chamberlain, Zaya Wade and Mia Goth made for an eclectic, très-trendy front row; Cate Blanchett appeared at Louis Vuitton alongside Zendaya, who wore a dramatic white double-zipper dress that has gone viral. Issey Miyake continues to explore movement in its runway shows, this season with musicians imitating chirping and other sounds found in nature. Peter White/Getty ImagesOne of the most joyful moments on the Miu Miu runway was the accessory styling.

CNN —Poland is planning to move around 10,000 troops to its eastern border with Belarus amid mounting concerns over Wagner forces in the region. Wagner troops have been stationed within Belarus – a close ally of Russia – in the wake of a short-lived rebellion carried out by the group. The Polish Defense Minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, told public radio that while 10,000 soldiers will be on the border, 4,000 will directly support the border guard and the remaining 6,000 will be in reserve. France conducts maiden test of hypersonic glider

The agency said a sounding rocket carrying a VMAX hypersonic glider launched on Monday from the Biscarosse missile test site on the Bay of Biscay, southwestern France. In 2019, France contracted aerospace company ArianeGroup to manage the VMAX program, aimed at developing a hypersonic glider demonstrator. Hypersonic gliders — unpowered, manoeuvring vehicles flying at speeds greater than Mach 5 (6,000km/h) — have been under study by major nuclear powers for several years. Hypersonic gliders are being designed to carry a nuclear or conventional warhead. Unlike ballistic missiles whose trajectories are fixed at launch, hypersonic gliders can change direction at high speed.

General view of the Air France office, at the Invalides, on May 22, 2020 in Paris, France. A French court on Monday cleared European planemaker Airbus and Air France of "involuntary manslaughter," almost 14 years after an airliner ploughed into the Atlantic en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, killing everyone on board. The ruling follows a historic public trial over the disappearance of AF447 in an equatorial storm on June 1, 2009, with families for the 228 victims demanding justice but Paris prosecutors acknowledging that formal blame could not be proved.
[1/5] French farmers drive their tractors near the Invalides during a protest over pesticide restrictions and other environmental regulations they say are threatening agricultural production, in Paris, France, February 8, 2023. REUTERS/Sarah MeyssonnierPARIS, Feb 8 (Reuters) - French farmers drove hundreds of tractors into Paris early on Wednesday to protest against pesticide restrictions and other environmental regulations they say are threatening farm production in the European Union's largest agricultural power. They warned imports of crops not subject to similar pesticide restrictions would threaten French jobs. Environmental activists say pesticide residues cause damage to the soil and wildlife. Unions were expecting 500 tractors and 2,000 farmers from around Paris to join the protest.
